If you already are using Address Book 3 then do not replace your existing AdBk Prefs file.
You should replac the AdBk Help files as there are some minor changes.
Address Book version 3 has new record format and the fields are will hold more characters.
The net result is that the record size has increased from 440 bytes to 590 bytes. As the list is memory resident, Address Book will require more memory to run. In addition, the application is much larger requiring even more memory.
Previously, if you had 250 records, 300K of memory would suffice for the application or DA. With the new application, 450K will be required. The new DA has less features than the application and uses about 100K less. Leaving the print and export capability out of the DA was done to keep it small and allow those with 1Meg Macs to use it.
If you are using System 6 and run MultiFinder then I suggest that you use the Address Book application and use QuicKeys™ or similar program to launch it.
If you are using System 7 then use the Address Book application and use QuicKeys™ or similar program to launch it. You can create an alias of the application or of the list file(s) and put it (them) in the apple menu folder.
Address Book v3 will open your version 1 or version 2 list file and convert it to the new format.
The DA no longer requires the Addr_list file to be in the system folder nor has it to be named "Addr_list". I suggest that you create an “Address Book” folder and put the application, AdBk Prefs, AdBk Help and all list files in it. Even if you prefer to use the DA, you will require the application to do printing.
Despite 22 Beta testers and all the testing I did myself, some bugs have been reported since I released version 3.0
1. With a Mac Plus, Mac SE or Mac Portable running Finder, the Address Book window locates itself off screen or jumps up off the top.
2. When the Address Book is background to certain applications and causes the cursor to change. This was due to a combination of my programming and the programming in the foreground application.
3. Would not dial with a couple of makes of modems which required more time than had I allowed between the modem setup commands.
4. On some machines running 32 bit addressing, the index window displayed garbage.
These have been fixed.
Please remove the old versions of the Address Book DA and application as some who didn’t, called me claiming that the bug fixes did not work. They were still opening the older version. You can and should use your existing “AdBk Prefs” file
Although I have not seen this it has been reported that in unique system and INIT configurations, the list in memory can get clobbered resulting in some records being removed. When a save is performed, this “clobbered list replaces the complete one on the disk. To prevent this, the list in memory is now verified before saving to disk and if suspect, you will be directed to revert to the list on disk. New entries will not be lost are they are saved to disk when entered. However, edited records will be as they were at the last save.
